Matheson- HMB
Sue Matheson's article uses John Wayne as a central figure in explaining how the Cowboy has been depicted. Matheson explores why this character has effected the viewers so much by delving into several movie films staring Wayne and what they portray to the world. It is pointed out that what makes Wayne an ideal hero causes him to ignore what seems to be some of the most important points of life "his wife, his children, and the law." The Western Hero is known for solving his own problems without the help of the law or others. He often appears on quest, whether it be a quest for the truth, or of vengeance. The Cowboy is known for creating his own morals and ethical code. Matheson arrives at the conclusion that Wayne himself is a paradox. That he would bring people to justice while needing "redemption" himself. The final question asks "Does the mean justify the end?" A question that is left up to Matheson's readers after she highlights all of the reasons people love and admire John Wayne.
