Rooster Cogburn - Chris Jones

Rooster Cogburn made in 1975 is a clear example of a revisionist Western because of the fact that a woman plays a major role in the film. It takes the role of the woman a step farther even because throughout the film we see Eula Goodnight, the female protagonist, consistently serving as the foil to Rooster Cogburn, the male protagonist. This consistent "battle" for supremacy is a representation of certain events going on during the time the movie was produced. One of the major events of the time was the "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match. During this match the whole world watched as a woman beat a man at tennis and instead of rejecting the outcome most opened it with cheers. The stigma that women should not best men in physical feats had been dissolved by the women's movement of the 60's and 70's. Eula Goodnight does not at all play the role of a "classic" woman because not only is she outspoken but she is a driving force of the plot rather than just a single point along the way.
